Semiconductors and Taiwan’s “Silicon Shield”
The United States and China depend on Taiwan's semiconductor industry. China imports 70% of this deficit from the Taiwan Semiconductor Manifacturing Company (TSMC); in addition, TSMC produces 92% of the most advanced chips designed by U.S. semiconductor companies.
TSMC leads the way in semiconductor production: there is no other company in the world that produces as efficiently and with a long-term vision as the Taiwanese company, which accounts for around 47% of total semiconductor sales revenue.
The conflict over Taiwan between China and the United States lies in the influence of TSMC, which is also an important part of China's plans to advance technological innovation.
