Búsqueda por el litio latinoamericano

Vie, 06/11/2021 - 16:21 -- anegrete

The search for Latin American lithium

Vie, 06/11/2021 - 16:15 -- anegrete

The energy transition has made lithium a critical element. In Latin America it is a priority issue that gained strength since the beginning of the second decade of the 21st century. The energy transition has forced the use of technology and inputs other than those related to hydrocarbons.

Lithium has gained an important place in the dispute for world hegemony. Since lithium was recognized as a key element for the energy transition of the vehicle fleet, it began to be considered as a strategic material.

Latin America stands out for its immense lithium reserves. Bolivia, Argentina and Chile are the three countries with the largest reserves of this material. Lithium and its exploitation in the region is a clash of interests. While the countries of the region themselves seek to take advantage of the growing demand for lithium to obtain fiscal resources from its exploitation, developed countries ensure access to it for the production of rechargeable batteries.

La imprescindibilidad de los semiconductores

Lun, 04/19/2021 - 20:13 -- anegrete

The indispensability of semiconductors

Lun, 04/19/2021 - 20:11 -- anegrete

The technological development of recent decades has transformed global value chains, in which there are inputs that have become indispensable and strategic. The semiconductor supply chain is unique.
Due to the increasing complexity of the technology and the need for mass production, this chain has been shaped by a set of specialized players at each stage of creation and production.
The nation that overcomes the obstacles of global chains and is able to produce chips autonomously will have control of the technology industry.

The RCEP: the new trade Asian block Facing Latin America and the Caribbean

Lun, 02/22/2021 - 13:05 -- cdeleon

With the recent formalisation of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) has the opportunity to access the world's largest economic bloc. It is an opportunity and an alternative for LAC blocs to coordinate and use this new market as a catapult for recovery from the COVID-19 crisis.

However, in the two centuries of LAC's history, repeated efforts at economic integration and multilateral cooperation have failed to materialise into a project.  Integration has been truncated by a combination of internal factors such as the conflict between the primary-export and industrial sectors and the principle of due obedience that obliges Pan-Americanism.

Ecuador is the most recent example of US interference in the internal politics of the region's countries.

The integration of Asia and the (dis)integration of the west

Jue, 12/10/2020 - 17:34 -- cdeleon

The signing of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) indicates a strengthening of regionalism in Asia while in the West it is in decline.

By the end of the last decade, the trade order and multilateralism were already being questioned. Some elements caused the crack in the globalization process in the West. The trade war between China and the United States; the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union; the emergence of populist and conservative governments in Europe of a nationalist nature, among others.

Latin America is not a region free of similar processes. The Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR), one of the most important integration projects that has been developed in the region, shows slight setbacks in its integration process.
